Obituary


On November 23, 2016, the angels came to take Gertrude Eileen Herring, age 95, to the home that Jesus had prepared for her. She was born November 15, 1921 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph W. and Elizabeth Homan, her sister Mary Jo Smith, her brother Eugene Homan and her grandson John Andrew Wiederkehr. At the time of her death she lived with her son Richard Thomas Herring.

She is survived by three sons: Joseph Herring of Dewey, AZ, Timothy Herring and wife Vira, of Rudy, AR...

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph W. and Elizabeth Homan, her sister Mary Jo Smith, her brother Eugene Homan and her grandson John Andrew Wiederkehr. At the time of her death she lived with her son Richard Thomas Herring.

She is survived by three sons: Joseph Herring of Dewey, AZ, Timothy Herring and wife Vira, of Rudy, AR Thomas Herring and wife Barbara, of Springdale, AR. One daughter, Linda Wiederkehr and husband AL of Wiederkehr Village, AR. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was retired as an Administrative Assistant with the Social Security Administration. She previously served as violinist with the Fort Smith Symphony Orchestra, had been the business manager for the Fort Smith Symphony Association and production manager for the summer musicals performed by the Fort Smith symphony Orchestra. She was a porcelain china artist and previously served as president of the Fort Smith Porcelain Artist Association, and was a member of the Arkansas Porcelain Art Teachers Association. Several pieces of her china painted pieces were displayed in the World Museum of Porcelain Artists. She was a member of the Fort Smith Photographic Alliance. She was an avid traveler, and resided in Belgium for a time. She was a member of Central Christian Church in Fort Smith.

Viewing will be Monday, November 28, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Fentress Mortuary. Her Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Central Christian Church 400 N. Waldron Rd. Fort Smith, AR. Graveside committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery 5403 Waldron Rd. Fort Smith, AR. The family will receive guests following the committal service at Central Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.
